Australias First Zero Waste Coffee Subscription.

You heard right! We realised a moral obligation as a new business to install a strategy to lessen our impact on the earth and encourage others to do the same. Below we will go into detail on how it affects current and future subscribers but not mother nature.

Some of you may be aware that we had been planning on launching a Zero Waste coffee subscription. The idea: You would still get the same variety and quality of coffee but in 100% compostable packaging. We were planning on having it as an option and still offering our non compostable options but when the question "Should we just go fully zero waste?" was put out via social media the response was a whitewash - 100% YES! We decided to listen to you and to our hearts and go for it!

How do you make a coffee subscription Zero Waste?

Why are we becoming a Zero Waste Coffee subscription?

Well after 10 years of working in coffee we've seen A LOT of waste. Too many coffee bags are going into land fill every day when, In many cases, the coffee is only stored in them for 7-10 days before being chucked. Let that sink in...  To think we need some high barrier, foiled lined bag that will take hundreds of years to break down to hold coffee for a week is fucking CRAZY!

Now not everyone is using these bags. Kudos to all the roasters out there using reusable buckets for their cafe partners. This is saving hundreds of thousands of coffee bags going into land fill every year. As well, cafes are now more often using compostable takeaway coffee cups and lids. However, when it comes to the packaging of beans we are letting mother nature down. This is where we step in...

Soon, all coffee for our subscriptions will be bought in bulk containers from the roasters. We will then package them into home compostable packaging before shipping them to you. You can then compost everything including the coffee grounds or dispose of it in your green waste bin. However, before this can happen we have to move through our current stock of yellow un-padded mailers. Approximately 1-2 months.

Do you want to save the planet with a zero waste coffee subscription?

If you are already a subscriber and would like to switch over to Zero Waste ASAP, please reply to this email and we'll get it happening! All you'll need is something to store the coffee in when it arrives. We are now stocking Ekobo's beautiful storage canisters made from 50% bamboo waste. Existing customers can have it for 20% off RRP.

The most important thing to note with zero waste is: The Ekobo canister only holds up to 450g. If you are on a Large subscription (1kg) this will drop down to 900g for 2 reasons
The first reason is to allow for us to ship to you with Auspost in the under 1Kg tier. We have actually been doing this already but we risk being fined by Auspost because 1kg of coffee + bag + satchel +sticker ends up being around 1100g.

The second reason is that you'll need a large canister to store your coffee in or purchase 2 X Ekobo canisters which would hold a total of 900g. If you buy 2 with the large subscription you get the second canister 50% off.  So the size breakdown for zero waste is.

-Small 250g
-Medium 450g
-Large 900g

We plan to test a smaller mixed 300g subscription with 2 smaller 150g canisters. We will also be conducting a price review once the switch has been made and might see some slight decreases in price. While the coffee amount has dropped for medium and large, the packaging and labour costs have gone up.

Is Zero Waste Coffee not really your thing?

If you don't want compostable packaging, we understand that everyone's different and has unique needs.  We don't want anyone feeling pressured to make the switch or guilty for not. We will continue shipping in the non-compostable packaging until we have run out of our yellow mailers. However, we do have to move on with our new direction, when this time arrives we will inform you. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
